The Academy of AI Music
As AI reshapes how music is composed, performed, produced, and experienced, the Academy provides a clear home for the people defining this new creative frontier. It brings recognition, standards, education, and community into one institution built for the future of music.
The Academy of AI Music and the AI Music Excellence and Education Foundation (a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization) are dedicated exclusively to recognizing, educating, and advancing the field of AI- generated and AI-assisted music. The Academy serves as the premier credentialing and awards body for the fastest-growing segment of the global music industry.
Music made with artificial intelligence has moved in a few short years from novelty to mass medium: tens of millions of people now create with these tools, AI-assisted records reach national charts, and the major labels have begun to license rather than litigate. What the field has lacked is a trusted, independent measure of what good looks like — and an institution to uphold it. The Academy exists to provide both.
We were founded on a simple conviction: that the imagination, intention, and craft of the people behind this music deserve serious recognition, and that the standards for judging it should be set by respected, independent voices rather than by any single platform or vendor. The Academy is owned by no platform and beholden to no tool-maker. Its members — not its funders — decide what excellence means and who embodies it.
That independence is paired with a clear point of view. We honor human authorship, treating AI as a way to augment human creativity rather than replace it. We insist on candor about how work is made. And we hold the whole field to published, transparent standards that creators, educators, and the wider industry can take seriously. Our flagship recognitions, the AIMEE Awards — for AI Music Excellence & Education — put those principles into practice each year, with the first live ceremony to be held in San Francisco, California in the spring of 2027.
This is a founding moment for a lasting institution. The window to define legitimacy in AI music is open now, and briefly. The Academy of AI Music intends to be the body that meets it — celebrating the creators shaping this new art form, and giving the field a standard of excellence worthy of the imagination behind it.
To celebrate, educate, and elevate the creators, technologists, and innovators shaping the future of AI-generated or AI-assisted music, while championing ethical, rights-respecting practices across the industry.
To become the global standard-bearer for AI music excellence — the institution that defines what great AI music looks and sounds like, and whose recognition carries the same prestige as elite awards in the traditional music world.
Only the highest-quality AI music deserves recognition. Rigorous, objective, and uniformly applied judging is brought to each musical creation with AI review.
Open to creators of all backgrounds, from bedroom and backyard producers to major-label artists.
All recognized works must respect copyright, licensing, and artist-consent frameworks.
Award categories and criteria evolve with technology; new forms of AI creativity are embraced.
Through the AIMEE Awards, an annual ceremony honoring the best AI music across genres and technical categories, the Academy identifies and celebrates the year's most outstanding work and the people behind it — spanning craft and production, technical innovation, education, and responsible practice. Recognition is the Academy's most visible work, and the vehicle through which its standards reach creators and audiences alike.
The Academy publishes clear, principled standards for what qualifies as excellent — and eligible — AI music, built on human authorship, transparent disclosure, verified consent, and honest ownership. Beyond judging, we advocate for the field: developing ethical standards, copyright and licensing frameworks, and guidelines that elevate quality, and engaging on policy on behalf of the global AI music community.
The Academy invests in learning about AI music — programs, conferences, workshops, newsletters, and curriculum for creators and fans alike, alongside the scholarship and research that help the field grow knowledgeably. Working in concert with the AI Music Excellence and Education Foundation, we recognize the educators and researchers advancing understanding of AI music and contribute resources that help creators and institutions engage with these tools thoughtfully and well.
The Academy convenes the people building this field through a global membership network — artists and producers, developers and technologists, industry leaders, scholars, advocates, and the public — around shared standards and a common purpose. By bridging the established music world, the research community, and the artists working at the frontier, we build the trust and connective tissue an emerging field needs to mature.
The Academy's authority rests on the judgment and standing of the people who guide it. Its leadership is drawn from across the field — established figures from the music industry, scholars who study it, and artists working at the frontier of AI creativity — chosen so that the Academy is worth taking seriously from its first day. Governance is deliberately independent: leadership answers to the Academy's mission and its members, not to any platform, sponsor, or vendor.
At the Academy's formation stands its Founding Class — a small, finite cohort of respected members who lend their names and perspective to the institution, help shape its standards and categories, and vote on honorees. There will only ever be one founding class, and its members' involvement is a defining part of what makes the Academy's recognition meaningful.
The Academy's work is carried out in conjunction with the AI Music Excellence and Education Foundation, Inc., the mission-driven arm devoted to the education, scholarship, and public-interest side of the field. Where The Academy of AI Music, LLC convenes members and confers recognition, the Foundation advances the learning, research, and responsible-practice goals that give that recognition its deeper purpose.
The Foundation's focus is the “E” in the AIMEE Awards — Excellence and Education alike. It supports the educators, curricula, researchers, and advocates who help people earn AI music, study it rigorously, and practice it responsibly, and it champions transparency, consent, and fairness as the field takes shape. Together, the Academy and the Foundation pair the recognition of excellence with a lasting commitment to how this art form is taught and understood.
The AI Music Excellence & Education Awards are the Academy's flagship program: an annual celebration of the best AI music and the people advancing the field. The awards span eight fields — the genre- spanning General Field; the Genre Awards; Craft & Production; AI Craft & Innovation; Education; Responsibility & Ethics; Special & Honorary; and Autonomous / Generative Work — recognizing not only creators and producers but also the educators, scholars, and advocates who help the field grow knowledgeably and responsibly. The inaugural 2025 cycle was compiled as a research-based retrospective; the first live AIMEE Awards will be held in San Francisco, California in the spring of 2027.
Underpinning the awards is a published Award Categories & Eligibility Framework — the Academy's standards program. Rather than measuring an arbitrary “percentage” of AI in a work, eligibility turns on the role AI actually played, applied through eligibility regimes matched to what each award judges. Three rules run across the whole program: honest ownership of AI work, verified consent that bars any imitation of a real artist without permission, and a plain-language disclosure filed with every entry describing how the work was made. Maintaining and refining these standards is ongoing work in its own right.
With the AI Music Excellence and Education Foundation, the Academy supports education and scholarship on AI music — recognizing outstanding educators, curricula, and research, and helping creators and institutions engage with these tools responsibly. This program gives the Academy a role beyond any single ceremony: strengthening how the field is taught, studied, and understood.
At its formation, the Academy is assembling a finite Founding Class whose judgment and standing define what the Academy means. Founding Members lend their name and perspective to the institution, help shape its standards, categories, and judging principles, and vote on honorees at the level of involvement they choose. It is a one-time, founding role — there will only ever be one founding class.
